General Farm Description: Keep It Real Vegetables is a regenerative urban farming project located in Layton, Utah. Formerly an urban backyard farming operation in Salt Lake City for thirteen years, we transitioned to a larger more permanent single farm location in 2024. We grow produce by hand on roughly two acres of historical farmland near the shore of the Great Salt Lake, about 30 minutes north of Salt Lake City.

Keep It Real Vegetables is hiring an Assistant Farm Manager for the 2025 season. The
Assistant Farm Manager will act as the Farm Owner/Manager’s right hand in leading all
aspects of a diversified small farm operation.

Major Duties & Responsibilities:
• Harvesting / facilitating harvests
• Weeding, planting, garden maintenance
• Completing self-directed on-farm projects
• Managing farm workers / directing guests
• Transportation / delivery of vegetables including setup and operation of farmer’s
markets
• Providing regular feedback and collaboration with the Farm Owner/Manager
regarding all aspects of the operation.
Requirements & Expectations:
• A full-season commitment (7 months, May through November) is required for
this position, with opportunities for additional work in the shoulder months of
April and December.
• 3-5 years prior farming experience with letter of recommendation from previous
farm employer. (We will consider applicants with less farm experience, but
preference goes to those with considerable previous on-the-ground farm
experience, an advanced farming skillset, and letters of recommendation.)
• Previous management experience is highly desired. Applicant must have or
quickly develop the social and leadership skills needed to manage an effective and
harmonious farm crew of 3-6 people.
• Must be comfortable working primarily in the early morning.
• Must be capable of executing on-farm tasks independently.
• Must have a reliable car and a flexible schedule.
• Must be willing to work most weekends and holidays.
• Must be physically fit and prepared to do strenuous physical activity in the heat
and sun for sustained periods of time.

Desired Attributes:
• Applicant must have good communication skills, as these are critical for both
team management and effective cooperation in running the broader operation
alongside the Farm Manager/Owner.
• Applicants must be highly self-motivated, and open to learning the new methods
and techniques specific to our particular operation.
• Applicant should have a growth mindset, a generally positive attitude, and a
desire to both learn and share their existing farm knowledge in an open exchange
with the Farm Manager/Owner and the field crew.


Educational Opportunities: This position is a paid apprenticeship providing extensive on-the-ground experience and training in all aspects of running a successful urban farming operation in the high desert. • Expanding your existing farming skillset and learning the secrets of growing productive yields of a variety of different crops in our extremely challenging climate, and the techniques needed to deal with all manner of the accompanying environmental challenges: heat, wind, hail, birds, insect and disease pressure, etc. • Learning how to prepare for, set up and stage profitable farmer’s markets, as well as how to effectively work with local restaurants and food purveyors. • Upon successful completion of a full farm season, we will be happy to offer written letters of recommendation and connect you with an extensive pool of local and national connections and resources to continue your own farming journey should you decide not to continue working with us.

Skills Desired: 3-5 years of on-farm experience is highly recommended, but not required

Meals: not usually, although we often do potlucks for work meals

Stipend: This is a full time paid position

Housing: There is an option to rent a room at the farm owner's home at a discounted rate near the farm if the applicant desires housing
