Internship information
General Farm Description: Rolling Hill Farm is a 13 acre small, mixed production commercial organic farm. On just over an acre, including two greenhouses, we grow a wide variety of vegetables and raise egg laying hens and broiler chickens. This food is sold at farmer's markets, to restaurants, and to a CSA of sorts. Beautiful location, overlooking the Catskills

Internship Starts: 4/13
Internship Ends: 10/31
Number of Internship Available: 1
Application Deadline: 4/1
Minimum Length of Stay: All season

Internship Details:

This position offers the opportunity to work with an experienced farmer, along with one other person, occasional volunteers, and Henry the farm dog, four days per week, in a commercial organic market garden setting. Having a strong work ethic and being excited to learn about vegetable farming is more important than experience for this position. This is a paid position with ample opportunities for learning, not strictly an internship.

Four days per week: M, T, Th and F, 8-4:30 each day

Responsibilities

The job will involve most of the activities required to run the farm: Seeding in the greenhouse, preparing beds, planting, weeding, irrigating, harvesting and processing vegetables, occasional deliveries, tending to the laying hens, organizing and cleaning. Part of the philosophy at RHF is to continuously learn and improve how we do things—this keeps things interesting for everyone—so part of your job will be to provide your input.

Qualifications

Strong personal integrity

Ability to work quickly

Ability to work with care

Ability to lift 40 pounds repeatedly

Willingness to work outside in all weather conditions, including sweltering heat, rain and wind

Commitment to creating a safe and welcoming work space

Educational Opportunities: This position will primarily provide its education through on the job experience, and will accordingly be paid as a job. In addition, all my reference materials will be fully available to you. Because you will be working closely with me, as farm owner and manager, there is ample opportunity to ask questions. Because of the size of the farm, you will not be doing the same thing all day, such as weeding a 500 foot row of carrots! Instead our attention will shift for instance from harvesting to planting, to cultivating to preparing beds all in one day, hence there will be exposure to many things.

Skills Desired: Having a strong work ethic and being excited to learn about vegetable farming is more important than experience for this position.

Meals: Bring your own lunch. Because lunch is 30 or 45 minutes, there is usually no time to cook, although once a week I or someone else will cook a community meal for all to share.

Stipend: $17/hr + vegetables to take home

Housing: No
