General Farm Description: Folklore Farm in Cherryfield, Maine, is a diversified vegetable farm with deep roots in sustainable agriculture and community-based growing. The farm is an integral part of the Washington County food system providing fresh and nutritious produce since 2012. What began as a small for-profit venture has grown into something even more powerful: a mission-driven, community-serving farm stewarded by Healthy Acadia as part of our Healthy Food for All programs. In 2025, guided by a deep commitment to mutual aid, food justice, and resilient local systems, Folklore Farm transitioned from a traditional business model to a project dedicated to growing food for all. Now, as a food bank farm and a proud project of Healthy Acadia, Folklore Farm focuses its growing power on nourishing communities throughout Washington County and beyond. Every seed planted and every harvest gathered supports the wellbeing of our neighbors through local food security organizations. The farm consists of a small heated propagation greenhouse, an unheated high-tunnel greenhouse and 2+ acres of row crops. Our primary crops are garlic, carrots, beets, beet greens, tomatoes, onions, lettuce, cabbage, kale, peppers, squash and swiss chard. We operate a small tractor for initial tillage, bed forming, and some cultivation but most weeding is done by hoeing. Everything we grow is washed and packed onsite. Currently, there are no farm animals residing at Folklore but we do have our wonderfully friendly companions Harry (chocolate lab) and Poppy (black lab) that keeps us motivated on hard days. Dan is the sole operator of Folklore Farm, though his wife Lizzie will be a frequent visitor and helper as well as many friends in the community. A part-time intern from the College of the Atlantic will be living and working on the farm as well from June-August.

Internship Details:

Apprentices will be involved in all aspects of operating a small scale vegetable farm, from crop planning to harvest/washing/packing and everything in between.  It will be dirty hard work that is both fun and rewarding.  The farm operates Monday-Friday and so will your work week.


Educational Opportunities: You will learn about everything that goes into operating a small farm and can decide if you'd like a specific aspect of the operation to focus on. Folklore Farm is committed to food sovereignty and you will be a part of creating a more food stable community for all Washington county residents.

Skills Desired: Agriculture experience is great but not necessary. We are looking for folks who are willing to learn, willing to work hard and play hard, who enjoy being outside, who are good at working with others but also by themselves and who show up to work everyday ready to do.

Meals: Apprentices will have access to all food grown on farm. The stipend will include $50 a week for groceries.

Housing: Yes. Apprentice housing is available as part of the compensation for working at Folklore Farm. We have two off grid tiny houses on the farm that are private and cozy, with great views of the tidal river the borders the farm to the east. Each house has a basic kitchen, solar power for lights and charging electronics, an outdoor shower and lofted sleeping space. A shed is available for apprentices for extra storage and pets will be considered.
