Internship information
General Farm Description: Each week, interns split their time between two (or possibly three) farms. Laughing Crow Farm (Bainbridge Island) is a 30 year old business operating on a historic 40 acre farm. Full Tilth Farm (Poulsbo) is managed by two former Laughing Crow apprentices, now in their 15th year of farming. Laughing Crow has about two acres in annual vegetables, specializing in storage crops. Full Tilth uses no-till techniques to grow about an acre of mixed vegetables and about an acre of berries, and propagates plant starts in greenhouses. Laughing Crow is also associated with Bainbridge Vineyards, a 6-acre organic vineyard making all its own wines on site. The two farms use a mixture of draft horses, tractor, and hand power, and sell our products at local farmers markets, via CSA, and to restaurants. All organic practices used. The farms are about 15 min (driving) apart from each other, are a short ferry ride from Seattle and close to great hiking on the Olympic Peninsula. ** One intern will also be able to work and live at Bees and Greens farm in Kingston, and will have additional opportunities in beekeeping, poultry raising, and microgreens as part of their weekly activities. https://beesandgreens.com/ Full Tilth address: 5237 Falcon Ridge Ln NE, Poulsbo, WA 98370. Laughing Crow address: 8997 NE Day Rd, Bainbridge Island, WA 98110. Bees and Greens address: 9575 Barnswallow Way NE, Kingston, WA 98346

Internship Details:

Internship/apprenticeship with two complementary, multi-generational, women-owned small organic family farms. Many opportunities for learning and leadership within a great community! Wide variety of vegetable, berry, and vineyard tasks where you will work alongside the farmers: seeding, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, pruning and vine tending. Our normal weekly schedule is Tues – Sat with Sunday and Monday off.  Several free educational workshops organized by WSU and Kitsap County Extension will be part of your curriculum. We are excited to share our farming knowledge with a new generation of farmers!

We also have a summer-only internship available – please find this listed under “Full Tilth and Persephone Farm”.

****Please submit a cover letter, resume and three references to apply. Please email both addresses listed****

Educational Opportunities: Many opportunities for learning and leadership within a great community! This is primarily a work-based internship with most learning happening in the field. We have found it meaningful to take time during the workday to go over topics that are pertinent to the task at hand. You will get a well-rounded, hands-on experience of small-scale vegetable farming, including exposure to propagation, irrigation, soil preparation, weed management, season extension techniques, harvesting, insect & disease control, marketing, etc. You will also gain an understanding of vineyard management in the Puget Sound region. Interns will participate in off-farm educational workshops (during work hours) run cooperatively by Washington State University (WSU) Kitsap County Extension and local farmers. This will help provide a broader perspective on farming options and skills. For individuals that are self-motivated and willing to commit time above and beyond the internship daily expectations, we can offer further learning opportunities in farm business planning, using draft horses, small construction, wine making, raising poultry, aquaponics, etc.

Skills Desired: We work hard and enjoy what we do! We farm because we love the lifestyle and strive to create a fun and happy environment in which to grow not only food, but community. We are looking for two individuals who have a positive attitude, enthusiasm about farming and local food, a desire to learn, a dependable nature, a strong back and good knees (including ability to lift 40 lbs.), are comfortable working independently and with a team, and are willing to work hard outside in all weather for long hours at repetitive tasks. Good people/communication skills are important. You must have your own transportation (in order to get back and forth between the two farms.) You must be 18 yrs or older. Prior farming or gardening experience is preferable but not necessary. Interest in eventually starting your own farm business is a plus!

Meals: Produce from the farms will be available for your use all season. We generally bring our own lunches but eat together during work days and love to gather sporadically for an evening meal/potluck. Other than that, meals can be on your own or shared with other interns.

Stipend: Interns work part time on two or three farms, totaling 40 hours per week (up to 45-50 hours in July and Aug). Pay is approx $1000/month (DOE) with housing provided, educational curriculum, access to some farm produce for cooking, and possible year-end bonus. With the price of housing in our area, we consider the free housing as a significant portion of the internship's "stipend" as well as the free educational opportunities available.

Housing: Interns will have free housing/utilities for the season. One option is a shared community of tiny houses on Bainbridge Island. Another option is a private yurt at Bees and Greens Farm. Details will be discussed with candidates to determine the best placement.

Preferred method of Contact: Email preferred, phone ok. Please email both addresses listed.
