General Farm Description: We are a first-generation, family-owned farm focusing on year round production of certified organic gourmet culinary mushrooms. We also grow a very limitied amount of produce for market and home use. The farm is located in the valleys and ridges of southwestern PA, outside the town of Everett. The mushrooms are all cultivated indoors in a pole barn, nestled on a beautiful 60 acres of rolling hills and woods, with nearly half a mile of creek frontage along Shaffer Creek.CRAFT Member Farm? Internship Details:
We are hiring a full-time employee to assist in all aspects of farm production. No mushroom cultivation experience is required, training will be provided to become proficient in all aspects of cultivation.
Fulltime: 35-40 Hours / week. More or less depending on individual situation.
This position will be a part of all aspects of mushroom cultivation, from substrate production, inoculation, harvesting, packing, and cleaning in between! We are adding several new grow rooms in 2025, with hopes of adding 3 more full time employees by fall 2025.
Compensation:
Base Pay (W2): $17-20/hour
Annual performance based bonuses.
Requirements:
- No mushroom cultivation experience required, training will be provided.
- Be physically fit enough to comfortably lift 50 lbs, work on your feet for 8 hours and repeatedly lift 10-15 lbs throughout the day.
- Reliable transportation. We are in the mountains, in the winter we often have snow. An appropriate vehicle is advised
General Responsibilities:
- Follow direction of Management to fulfill production goals
- Maintain cleanliness of work areas
Daily Responsibilities
- Grow room Maintenance
- Harvest- Record
- Cut open blocks, consolidate racks
- Clean as needed
- Fulfill production schedule
- Load steamer- Record
- Inoculate- Record
- Move racks from incubation to fruiting
- Dispose of spent blocks to compost pile
- Clean, sanitize, and rinse harvest crates and racks
- Assist with packing of orders as needed
- Assist with general maintenance as needed
Educational Opportunities: Will be educated in all aspects of gourmet mushroom cultivation through on the job experience.
Skills Desired: No specific skills are required, but experience with physical work typical of farms. 8 hour days, lifting 50 lbs comfortably, repeatedly lifting 10 lbs. Will train in all necessary processes. The process is fairly straightforward, and there is a lot of repetition every week (we produce several hundred 10 lb grow blocks per week).
Meals: no, but employees get access to excess fresh mushrooms, and usually some garden produce and eggs as well.
Stipend: Yes, competative hourly pay plus bonuses for long-term employees.
