Internship information
General Farm Description: We farm at two locations. Most of our production occurs on 10 acres in the Maxwelton Valley. We grow approximately 30 different crops inside what used to be a training track for race horses. In addition, we incorporate a few seed production crops each year. Typically, we also include a few head of sheep or 50-60 broiler chickens as well, mostly for soil development and fertility.CRAFT Member Farm? No
Internship Starts: 04/07/2025
Internship Ends: 10/31/2025
Number of Internship Available: 2
Application Deadline: March 5, 2025
Minimum Length of Stay: 7.5 months
Internship Details:
Our Apprentices will ideally come with some academic understanding of community scaled farming systems, or some experience working on such. What we offer is a 7-month intensive practice of the critical thinking, decision-making, priority setting, and problem solving that is very hard to learn from a book or virtual program. You will be supervised/mentored by our experienced field staff, and will work through the full season on tasks that include: propagation, bed prep, fertility management, cultivation, judicious tillage, harvesting/wash-pack, marketing, irrigation, crop planning, basic equipment maintenance, and more. It is an intense, physical/emotional/intellectual experience that requires you to bring your full self and yet holds great promise for preparing you to take on a farm business incubator (we have several such opportunities), or a management role with a small farm.
Educational Opportunities: Most training is hands-on out in the field, however the Apprenticeship fee covers our Small Farm Business Planning curriculum, as well as 8 sessions on topics related to regenerative practices (livestock care, soils, and seed production).
Skills Desired: At minimum, we encourage applicants to have completed a degree in Sustainable Agriculture, or an on-line/virtual small farm training program, or have spent a year working on a small scale farm in some capacity.
Meals: No. However, Apprentices are encouraged to harvest food from the field for their meals.
Stipend: Our Apprentices become part of our field team, and are paid WA State minimum wage ($16.66) for a 40 hour work week for the duration of the season. They are hired, and can be fired.
Housing: On site housing is available for $200/month, in small sleeping cabins. Shared bathroom, shower, and kitchen space is nearby on site.
