General Farm Description: R Farm is a 3 acre vegetable operation founded by John Rowland in 1980. Using organic growing methods from the start, John grew a variety of seasonal produce for the Western North Carolina region. Today, R Farm has changed ownership to Quail Romano & Hannah Jeske who began their farming careers at R Farm working as part-time seasonal employees under John Rowland. As the next generation of farmers, we are using some new growing methods but very much staying true to the legacy of what R Farm was & is. We are proud to be a part of the diverse food & agricultural scene here in the Asheville area & believe that with healthy soil, a lot of hard work and increasing experience we will be able to make this a sustainable business and lifestyle for ourselves. In addition to vegetables, we grow some herbs, flowers and have a large bamboo forest on the property. We harvest the bamboo shoots in the spring time for culinary purposes and harvest the mature bamboo for trellis material.CRAFT Member Farm? No

As an intern at R Farm, you will be exposed to a wide range of daily farm activities plus gain a big picture understanding of how our model fits into the local economy. Learn how a small farm can operate in the wholesale & non-profit sector, without doing farmers markets and still able to make a profit.
Typically, interns work part-time (2-3 days per week with the ability to pick up extra shifts as the season gets busier). We encourage part-time work to give you an opportunity to also have a second part-time job that might be less physically demanding and prevent burn-out. That being said, full time work is always a potential depending on the applicants needs/experience.
Start and end time is variable depending on season/weather/work-load. You can expect average work days to be about 7.5 hours with the maximum being 10 hours. During the main summer season, we start early (approximately 6:45 am) to harvest while the weather is still cool and then we move into the barn during the heat of the day to wash/pack orders. Daily start-time and work-tasks will be sent the day before you are scheduled to work via text or a shared app. You can expect to be working in a small group setting with a flexible 15-20 minute lunch break (Listen to your body & eat when you need).
We really appreciate dependability, being able to show up on time & in a good head space. We try to keep a positive, but fast-paced workspace and leave the drama outside the farm. That being said, we are excited to get to know you and what you can bring to the farm crew dynamic.
IDEAL CANDIDATE:
- Must live 30 minutes or less from the farm
- Previous experience working outdoors, in any field
- Interest in agriculture
- Enjoys manual labor
- Open to working one day on the weekend
- Flexible schedule since the work days can vary based on season/weather
- Does not mind tedious tasks
- Strong communication & organization skills
- Ability to retain information over time
- Positive outlook and healthy lifestyle
Educational Opportunities: Field work includes: hand-planting, harvesting, weeding, trellis work, pruning, bed prep & removal. Other tasks include: wash/pack for a variety of crops, occasional greenhouse work (seed starting & transplanting) Operational Learning potentials determined by the applicant: Drip Irrigation & Overhead irrigation installation, use of the plastic mulch layer, walk-behind BCS, plant maintenance (organic foliar sprays), fertigation, Learning different types of tractor Implements including the Potato planter & harvester, bamboo trellis installation, Jang direct seeder, Quick-Cut greens harvester, gas-powered T-post driver, gas-powered auger. Administrative learning potentials determined by the applicant: Crop Planning, Record Keeping, Soil Analysis
Skills Desired: Experience working outdoors is required, however not necessarily within the agricultural field.
Meals: No set meals provided. Once in awhile we might organize a shared crew meal. Extra vegetables / seconds are available at no cost.
Stipend: $17 per hour base rate $100 Gear Stipend at the beginning of the season $100 Bonus in late July/early August (ideally to use on self-care) End of Season Bonus (amount TBD)
Housing: No. However, we are located in Weaverville (approximately 20 min from Asheville) which allows for a diverse range of housing potentials.
