Internship information
General Farm Description: Rolling Hill Farm is a 13 acre small, mixed production commercial organic farm. On just over an acre, including two greenhouses, we grow a wide variety of vegetables and raise egg laying hens and broiler chickens. This food is sold at farmer's markets, to restaurants, and to a CSA of sorts. Beautiful location, overlooking the CatskillsCRAFT Member Farm? No
Internship Starts: 4/15
Internship Ends: 10/31
Number of Internship Available: 1
Application Deadline: 4/1
Minimum Length of Stay: All season
Internship Details:
This position offers a unique opportunity to work side by side with an experienced farmer three days per week. There will only be two or three of us on a given day, not including Henry the farm dog. This position might be perfect for someone who wants to dive into the workings of a commercial organic farm, but who has other life responsibilities or isn’t quite willing to commit to full time farm work. Having a strong work ethic and being excited to learn about vegetable farming is more important than experience for this position.
8AM-4:30PM each day
Responsibilities
The job will partly consist of harvesting and processing vegetables. Time will also be spent seeding in the greenhouse, preparing beds, planting, weeding, watering, helping to move things around, and other activities required to run a small farm. Six days per season we process broiler chickens so your assistance may be requested for that, if you are interested.
Qualifications
Strong personal integrity
Ability to work quickly
Ability to work with care
Ability to lift 40 pounds repeatedly
Willingness to work outside in all weather conditions, including sweltering heat, rain and wind
Commitment to creating a safe and welcoming work space
Educational Opportunities: This position will primarily provide its education through on the job experience, and will accordingly be paid as a job. In addition, all my reference materials will be fully available to you. Because you will be working closely with me, as farm owner and manager, there is ample opportunity to ask questions. Because of the size of the farm, you will not be doing the same thing all day, such as weeding a 500 foot row of carrots! Instead our attention will shift for instance from harvesting to planting, to cultivating to preparing beds all in one day, hence there will be exposure to many things.
Skills Desired: Having a strong work ethic and being excited to learn about vegetable farming is more important than experience for this position.
Meals: Bring your own lunch. Because lunch is 30 or 45 minutes, there is usually no time to cook, although about once a week I or someone else will cook up something quick and simple with farm produce, which we can share.
Stipend: $17-19/hr + vegetables to take home
Housing: No
Preferred method of Contact: Email
