General Farm Description: Dig In works to increase community food security in Yancey County (Western North Carolina) through building the capacity of groups and individuals to grow their own food in community. They tend a 1 acre farm using organic methods with staff, volunteers and guests, cultivating practices that provide fresh and nutritious food for everyone by harnessing the resources, diverse traditions, and vision of people who participate in our work. Dig In! Yancey Community Garden is hiring two part-time positions for 2026: a seasonal intern (March-October) and a summer intern (late May-mid-August). Both positions are 15 hours/week (ideally Tuesday and Wednesday on site), and compensated at $17.50/hour.
The interns work under the direction of the Garden Manager and alongside interns and volunteers to receive in-field, hands-on training in all agricultural operations and educational programming. The garden intern will learn and assist in all aspects of growing food at Blankenship garden site using sustainable agricultural practices. This includes substantial physical labor for activities like preparing beds, transplanting and seeding, trellising, weeding, mulching, harvesting, mowing and weed whacking. Interns may also optionally facilitate educational experiences for volunteers and visitors or participate in our food sharing programs.

Educational Opportunities: Participation in local CRAFT tours is encouraged. Dig In will consider on a case-by-case basis paying the registration fees for self-identified professional development opportunities (workshops, conferences, webinars, etc).

Housing: Dig In does not provide housing. We are committed to tapping into our networks to help the garden interns find housing if needed, but rental housing can be challenging in this area.
