Internship information
General Farm Description: Sunset Acres Farm is a family-run goat dairy situated on the banks of a saltwater river in coastal Maine. We milk about 80 goats (by machine) and make many different cheeses which we sell at local farmers' markets and deliver to stores and restaurants along the coast. We also buy and market meats from other local farmers. Our farm is small as far as farms go, only 20 acres, but that is plenty to give the goats access to pasture where they can play and hang out. However, most of their feed is purchased hay and grain. We are not strictly organic, but as close to it as possible. "Our animals are vegetarians and don't do drugs".

Internship Details:

We generally have two  interns living on the farm to share chores. All will be trained to do all the farm chores, which include milking the goats twice a day, feeding and caring for them, operating a tractor and skid-steer, pasteurizing milk, making and packaging many different cheeses, cleaning and sanitation, doing minor farm repairs and upkeep and helping out at farmers’ markets.

Educational Opportunities: You will learn how to milk, feed and care for goats (including birthing and feeding babies in the spring); how to pasteurize milk and make many different kinds of cheese. Depending on your interest we can go further into the finer details of cheesemaking. You will help us at some farmers' markets and deliveries so will learn the fine art of marketing farm products, including learning the many different cuts of meat that we buy from local farmers. Over the past 40 years we have farmed and marketed all classes of livestock (except beef) and produced value-added products and can teach you what has worked (and NOT worked) for us, so you can learn from our mistakes and hopefully avoid your own.

Skills Desired: Concern for and appreciation of livestock, observant, attention to detail, flexibility, ability to lift 50 pounds, hard worker. We will train in the necessary skills.

Meals: We provide most groceries and a separate kitchen where all interns cook and socialize. Shared cooking and cleaning. Many fresh vegetables from our garden.

Stipend: Stipend paid based on work effort and quality of work. $600 to $ 1,200 plus room & board.

Housing: Everyone has own cabin. Electricity, heat, water, Wi-Fi, washing machine. Seasonal water at this time. Use of separate shower and bathroom in our house.

Preferred method of Contact: Email or text
