General Farm Description: The Farm at Our House is a certified organic mixed vegetable farm committed to sustainable farming practices located on land owned by Our House Inc., a residential rehabilitation program for young men in the juvenile justice or foster care system. We farm on 7 acres including 3 high tunnels and 1 greenhouse and manage 10 additional acres. You can find us at the Silver Spring farmers market, our two CSA pick up locations and our produce is sold at local grocery stores and restaurants. Number of Internship Available: 2 Farm Hand Positions and 2-3 College Intern positions

Minimum Length of Stay: We are flexible, but really are looking for people who can commit to working the spring and/or fall seasons.

Internship Details:

Interns will engage in a broad number of activities and take on a broad range of responsibilities related to farming, Below are the primary activities. We do like to match workers with their interests whenever possible.
Fieldwork: Implement daily priorities and policies as determined by farm owner and farm manager. Lead and perform field work, including planting, cultivation, irrigation, harvesting, post-harvest handling of crops; assist with mushroom production, equipment maintenance, repair and requisition, greenhouse and high tunnel maintenance and supervision and property landscaping; Identify crop selection including crops specific to Southeast Asia.
Marketing and Business Development:
Possibly represent farm at weekly farmers markets or CSA pickup site; ensure delivery of produce to wholesale customers; manage produce allocation among market, wholesale and CSA; additional administrative tasks as needed.
Administrative: Ensure work is documented; sales are recorded and organic certification documentation requirements are met.

Educational Opportunities: Work and learn from farmers with 18 years of collective experience. Ability to attend CRAFT and CASA workshops. Access to agricultural newsletters and books. Tractor skills training.

Skills Desired: Enthusiasm and Curiosity for Farming (Summer Interns and Farm Hands); Bachelor's or Associate’s degree in any field preferred (Farm Hand); Driver’s License (Farm Hand) Ability to do physical labor for long periods of time including activities that involve bending down for extended periods of time.. (Both); Six months of experience farming or horticultural experience with the application of sustainable agriculture principles and organic farming preferred (Farm Hand Only); Experience working with at-youth preferred (Farm Hand Only)

Meals: All workers receive produce for free. We do cooperatively prepare lunch, but not every day.

Stipend: Yes. Interns are paid based on experience and length of commitment between $12 and $15/hr.
