Internship Details:

Learn to run a successful organic vegetable farm while earning a living wage. We prioritize work-life balance starting with a 40-hour work week and a fixed work schedule. Our training program helps employees to build farm skills and to learn principles of efficient farm operation. We maintain a fun, communal work atmosphere and prioritize respect for the people who work at the farm. Positions begin at $15 per hour and include on-farm housing and all the veggies you can eat.

Daily activities vary greatly both throughout the day and throughout the season. Positions begin in March, April, May, or June. Early positions begin with a heavy transplanting/seeding schedule, with some cultivation and field preparation. Planting continues in May, but with the addition of a lot of harvesting, washing and packing produce for markets/CSA. We do some mulching, trellising, cultivating, and other general crop care activities. There will be opportunities to learn and do equipment maintenance as well as whole farm management. Educational Opportunities: Get paid to see and participate in the inside workings of a successful diversified organic vegetable operation first hand. We are very open with information including both the production side and the business side of things. We are CRAFT members in the High Country, which puts on several workshops/tours at other local farms. We have a library on the farm with plenty of both technical and philosophical agricultural books (as well as pleasure reading books). The farmers believe strongly in helping you to understand the "why" of farming in addition to the "how." We answer all questions. Workshops are offered on budgeting for start-up farmers, record keeping, and marketing.

Skills Desired: No experience necessary. Farming is a physically demanding job, and this is the southeast, so some demonstration of physical endurance in heat and humidity is a definite plus. This is a learning opportunity, so we give priority to those interested in a farming career. Other than that, we require good team players (I cannot emphasize this enough!) and hope you have an easy smile and good sense of humor.

Meals: You provide your own meals or coordinate with your fellow "villagers", but there are plenty of free fruits/veggies available for you to eat! We encourage you to harvest and eat whatever you can from the farm's bounty. Occasionally we have farmily "socials" at our house.

Stipend: $15 hourly wage to start (raises possible based on performance-yours and the farm's) plus housing including utilities and veggies. Employees will work 40 hrs/week for full time, part time hours are flexible!

Housing: There is a shared kitchen and 2 bathrooms (shared by up to 4 people), and laundry facilities, plus four small primitive but private sleeping cabins (with electricity). Electricity, water, propane, and laundry facilities are included with the housing.
