Learn the ins and outs of a diversified, organic vegetable farm while earning a fair wage. Positions begin at $9.50 per hour and include on-farm housing, paid vacation days, and all the veggies you can eat. Daily activities vary greatly both throughout the day and throughout the season. We begin in February, March and April with a heavy transplanting/seeding schedule, with some cultivation and field preparation. Planting continues in May, but with the addition of a lot of harvesting, washing and packing produce for markets/CSA. We do some mulching, trellising, cultivating, and other general crop care activities. There will be opportunities to learn and do equipment maintenance as well as whole farm management. The team will be expected to manage the farm without us for a few days in August or September (after everyone returns from paid vacation), so we’ll spend some time together practicing the skills necessary to manage leading up to September.
Educational Opportunities: Get paid to see and participate in the inside workings of a successful diversified organic vegetable operation first hand. We are very open with information including both the production side and the business side of things. Depending on the work load, we will try to squeeze in a "field trip" or two to other local farms. We are CRAFT members in the High Country, which puts on several workshops/tours at other local farms. We have an library on the farm with plenty of both technical and philosophical agricultural books (as well as pleasure reading books). We are happy to provide as much information as you want, but we don't have a "curriculum". You'll need to ask questions! If desired, we can do little workshops on record keeping and cash flow (the areas of our particular expertise), and marketing. Production education comes from being involved in production!
Skills Desired: No experience necessary. Farming is a physically demanding job, and this is the southeast, so some demonstration of physical endurance in heat and humidity is a definite plus. This is a learning opportunity, so we give priority to those interested in a farming career. Other than that, we require good team players (I cannot emphasize this enough!) and hope you have an easy smile and good sense of humor.
Meals: You provide your own meals or coordinate with your fellow "villagers", but there are plenty of free fruits/veggies available for you to eat! We encourage you to harvest and eat whatever you can from the farm's bounty. Occasionally we have farmily "socials" at our house.
Stipend: $9.50 hourly wage to start (raises possible based on performance-yours and the farm's)plus housing including utilities and veggies. Employees will work 40 hrs/week. Employees will enjoy a paid vacation in July or August. In lieu of housing, an employee may opt to commute from other housing in which case, we will provide a gas stipend.
Housing: We have a travel trailers that is shared as common space/kitchen (we're actively working on replacing one camper with a kitchen/bath facility), small bathroom and a small "living room" plus four small primitive but private sleeping cabins (with electricity). There is an additional shared bathhouse that includes laundry facilities. A second travel trailer with a kitchen is also available. Electricity, water, propane, and laundry facilities are included with the housing.
