General Farm Description: Hogstead is a 16 acre pork, poultry, and vegetable operation located north of Seattle, Washington. The family farm direct markets products through farmer's markets, farm stand, and online sales. Hogstead focuses on sustainability through pasture based management of livestock and vegetable production that utilizes on-farm generated compost. Internship Details:

Seeking one prospective farmers to assist with a 1.5 acre (max) organic vegetable operation on an established, direct-market farm. The farm utilizes farmer’s markets and other direct marketing.  Growing area is currently in production, including cover cropped areas.  One, 2000 sq ft high tunnel greenhouse is on the production area.  The garden area is part of a 16 acre farm primarily in livestock production. The garden benefits from closed-loop compost utilization from the livestock production portion of the farm.  Virtually unlimited, high-value compost maximizes vegetable yields.  

 Equipment and materials available on site include the following: 

  • 33hp Kubota L3300 with loader & pallet forks.
  • 65hp Ford 4400 with loader. 
  • 5’ Maschio rototiller. 
  • 6’ chisel plow. 
  • Single bottom plow. 
  • Compost spreader/hill maker (approx 2 yard with PTO)
  • Large & small scale compost tea set up. 
  • 3 point mounted flame weeder & hand flame weeders.
  • 3 point attachment with furrower, hiller, and weeding sweeps. 
  • 12’x100’ low tunnel greenhouse in storage. 
  • Drip lines, headers, hoses, water pipe, and attachments for irrigation.
  • Produce wash/prep sinks. 
  • Seed starting cells and flats
  • Plastic ground cover/mulch plastic (some pre-cut) 
  • Various trellising materials
  • Variety of hand tools, harvesting equipment and materials
  • Permanent raised beds and bi-seasonal raised beds 
  • 2024 garlic crop is in the ground. 

Vegetable production focused internship:    Hogstead is seeking an intern looking to work a season on a livestock-integrated vegetable operation.  Prior vegetable growing experience is not mandatory for a new farmer, as the owner will provide guidance on vegetable growing techniques and fund the operation.  Owner has 15 years growing experience in the Puget Sound region.  Additional labor is provided by the owner and interns working on the farm.  Serious work ethic is required to create a successful growing season.  Living accommodations are available (camper or converted school bus) as needed.  At the conclusion of the growing season, the garden intern will have accumulated knowledge sufficient to start and run an operation independently.    Option to help with farmer’s markets is available and operating farmers markets comes with an increased stipend.

Housing: Campers available on farm. Outdoor kitchen with water, refrigerator, gas range and wood burning range. Outdoor shower and composting toilet.
