Mapping Reveals Expanding Global Extent of Greenhouses

The University of Copenhagen mapped the global extent of greenhouses, revealing that greenhouse cultivation is increasing rapidly and covers at least 1.3 million hectares of the Earth’s surface. This figure is nearly three times more than previous estimates and includes cultivation in glass houses or open fields wrapped in plastic films. The study shows that much of the increase is taking place in low- and middle-income countries in the Global South. Greenhouse cultivation in China accounts for more than 60% of the total global area. Greenhouse production can offer advantages such as more stable yields and efficient irrigation. However, it can also contribute to over-exploitation of water resources as well as high energy consumption and plastic pollution. Researchers say this study calls attention to the need for consideration of the impact of greenhouse production and the potential need for regulation.
