Study Finds Risks to Farmers Increasing with Climate Change

As the climate continues to change, the risks to farming are only going to increase, say California scientists in a paper published in the open access journal Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems. “Climate Smart Agriculture: Assessing Needs and Perceptions of California’s Farmers” identifies the climate challenges farmers are already experiencing and documents how farmers are working to address them. Two-thirds of farmers surveyed agreed that climate change is happening and requires action, with most saying that climate change impacts are greater than they were 10 years ago. Specifically, farmers cited water-related issues and temperature-related issues. Farmers indicated that they are managing water resources, improving soil health, and utilizing renewable energy sources to adapt.
