Internship information
General Farm Description: Located in Northeastern PA, Old Tioga Farm is a well-established small vegetable farm with an on-farm fine dining restaurant. For the past 15 years we have offered a vegetable/bread CSA for 70 families on one acre of land, but with 5 acres of land to grow into, there is significant opportunity for growth. Although not certified, we follow organic practices. Our restaurant, which has an intense following, is open on Fridays and Saturdays by reservation only.CRAFT Member Farm? No
Internship Starts: April 15
Internship Ends: December 15
Number of Internship Available: 2
Application Deadline: Rolling
Minimum Length of Stay: Full season
Internship Details:
The vegetable apprenticeship is designed for those considering a career in sustainable vegetable farming. One season of experience is preferred, though not required. Depending on experience, apprentices will gradually take on increasing responsibility so that by the end of the season they are comfortable with all aspects of the operation, from seeding to tillage and from harvesting to cultivation. The work week is 40 hours per week (with the potential for rare exceptions) to maintain a healthy life/work balance.
Although the restaurant is not a required part of the vegetable apprenticeship, there would be opportunity for compensated involvement with that aspect of the business as well.
Educational Opportunities: As a true apprenticeship (as opposed to an internship), education is at the heart of the experience. Time is taken to explain at every step of the process. The farmer is a former high school teacher with strong communication skills and a deep knowledge of vegetable production. In addition to on-farm learning, apprenticeships are encouraged to take paid time once a month to visit other sustainable farms.
Skills Desired: By far the most important attributes are a passion to learn and a positive attitude. Practical skills required include the ability to work in all weather, attention to detail, physical stamina, and good communication skills.
Meals: Communal meal once a week.
Stipend: $1000 per month + housing + vegetables (40 hour work week) + $1000 bonus for finishing the season
Housing: Housing is in a small house on land bordering the farm.
