Perelandra Garden Assistant
This is a part-time, paid position, Mondays through Thursdays, 20-24 hours per week, year-round. Potential for expanded hours and for long-term employment.
This internationally recognized garden is like no other. If you care about the environment, have a deep appreciation for nature, prefer to work outdoors, and have a good sense of humor, you might be just the person we’re looking for.
Our research garden needs a Garden Assistant. You must enjoy working outdoors in all weather, including summer heat and winter cold.
You must also have respect for – but no fear of – wildlife, including snakes, skunks, spiders, an occasional visiting black bear, possums, rogue squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, deer, hawks, bees and frogs.
Since this is a research garden, the assistant must be willing to listen attentively and follow instructions closely, with the understanding this is a different approach to working in nature.
No formal gardening experience or special training is needed. (You’d only have to set all that aside anyway.) But you must like to learn, have good reading and listening skills, know when to ask questions, maintain an organized workspace and follow schedules. It’s a plus if you are just as happy working alone as with others.
And finally, you can’t be afraid of working for a strong woman who uses salty language along with her good sense of humor, and 46 years of experience developing the Perelandra garden research.
This job requires good health and the physical condition to comfortably and safely do strenuous work such as lift 50 lb bags and work in squatting and kneeling positions (because the garden is at ground level). You’ll be mulching, pruning, mowing, trimming, fertilizing, planting, caring for small ponds, repairing borders, weeding, maintaining garden tools and keeping them organized, keeping track of and ordering supplies, filling birdfeeders and birdbaths, and providing any other care the gardens and land may need throughout the year.
