General Farm Description: Island Harvest Farm is a three acre farm that grows and sells produce on Camano Island, WA. For the past 11 years, we have produced flavorful, high quality non-GMO crops by building the soil with natural inputs and crop rotations. We currently use a reduced tillage system to grow annual vegetables that are mainly sold in a roadside farm stand. The farm employs multiple seasonal workers. Internship Details:
Field crew members will perform all daily farm tasks as needed. Time will be split between the field and the pack shed. The majority of work requires the physical capability to contribute daily in a rigorous, fun, fast-paced agricultural setting.
Farm Crew Essential Functions:
- Planting (hand transplanting and hand seeding)
- Cultivation, weeding and thinning by hand and with hand tools
- Post-harvest/wash station work (washing, bunching, quality control, packing)
- Washing harvest crates
- Hand harvesting crops efficiently, safely and consistently
- Irrigation set-up (drip tape)
Educational Opportunities: Work along side farmers with 10+ years of experience. Opportunity to tour other local farms.
Skills Desired: Skills and Experience: • Previous farm or landscape experience is not required if you are able to take direction, learn quickly, ask for help/clarity as needed, and accept and act on constructive feedback. • The ability to meet the physical requirements of the position, including repetitive work spent standing, bending, squatting, lifting heavy objects and kneeling in all weather conditions. • Strong work ethic and positive attitude • Reliable and responsible with an interest in food production • Comfortable working independently and with a group • Excellent attention to detail and good judgement regarding product quality control and food safety while operating in a fast-paced environment
Meals: No, but access to seasonal produce from the farm.
Stipend: $17.50/hr
Housing: Yes. On farm housing available in a furnished, large RV with power and water for $300/month
