Season Extension
Season–extension tools can be used to ensure a longer growing season for your farming operation. This ranges from low-cost inputs such as row covers and caterpillar tunnels to larger infrastructure such as high tunnels, greenhouses, and ground–to–air heat–transfer systems.
This can increase the ability to grow crops in different growing zones and increase the longevity of an operation. Efficient passive solar greenhouses can decrease reliance on heating systems. When creating a closed environment such as a greenhouse, other issues can arise, including pest and disease management, nutrient cycling, and irrigation.
The practical ATTRA resources in this section will help farmers identify what season–extension plan will work best for them and how to overcome related issues.
